The statewide bandh called by the YSR Congress demanding special status to Andhra Pradesh, supported by the CPI and CPM on Saturday had little impact in Vizag city as the men in uniform arrested main leaders at various junctions in the city. However, the angry leaders and activists raised slogans demanding special status and condemned the arrest of leaders who are observing the bandh peacefully. While the general secretary of YSRC Vijaysai Reddy, CPM state secretariat member Ch Narasing Rao. CPI district secretary A.J. Stalin and a large number of activists arrested at the Jagadamba junction were shifted to the two town police station, Vamsi krishna Srinivas Yadav, CPM leader Ganga Rao and others were arrested at Maddilapalem and were shifted to the Three town police station and Tynala Vijay Kumar, Boddeti Nageswar Rao, Jiyyani Sridhar and other activists were arrested at Kancharapalem.
The impact of the bandh was visible only one hour as the activists blocked the NH-16 stretch at various parts in the city and neighboring districts of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. In Narsipatnam, the agi-tators hurled stones on the buses and damaged the windows of three buses of APSRTC. Condemning the arrests in Vizag, the YSRC and Left leaders said that the ruling TD which is actually supposed to take the lead for the bandh seeking special status, has been suppressing the agitations and they also pointed out that they have been observing the bandh peacefully and alleged that both TD and the BJP led NDA governments were playing dilly dallying tactics with regard to the special category status to AP.
