Vizag Ranks Low in Swachh Bharat :-

Despite efforts by the GVMC to keep the city clean, Vizag, the largest city in AP and racing to become a Smart City. has been ranked 205 — behind Tirupati (ranked 137) in implementing Swachh Bharat Mission. The ranking were done by the union urban development ministry. However, Vizag is ahead of Hyderabad and Vijayawada that were ranked 275 and 266 respectively The survey was done by the union urban development ministry under National Sanitation Policy of 2008. 476 class-I cities in 31 states and Union Territories, each with a population of more than one lath, were surveyed for Swachh Bharat ranking. About 30 cities and towns from AP and 11 from TS were part of the ranking survey. The rankings were based on a total of 42 points, including 20 for open defecation indicators and 22 for solid waste management indicators. Open defecation has become a menace in Vizag. According to the statistics available on the website of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, only 75,765 households have Integrated Household Toilet (IHHL) against the set tar-get of 1,56,460 for Above Poverty Line households. 

Of the set target of 2,52,875 toilets for Below Poverty Lines house-holds, only 1,89,979 has them. Open defecation is visible in core city areas like MVP Colony, Sagar Nagar and Pedda Waltair as there are about 50,000 families in the city without any IHHL. The situation is much worse in areas which fall in the outskirts of the city like Bheemili, Gajuwaka and Pendurthi where more than 70 percent of house holds do not have IHHL. According to a 2011 survey by the GVMC, about two lakh people in the city are still opt for open defecation, while about 80,000 people are dependent on the public toilets. It has been revealed that Vizag has about 68 open defecation spots. Vizag generates around 850 tonnes of garbage every day and the solid waste management plan Visakhapatnam Integrated Solid Waste Management (Viswam) is only implemented in 19 wards out 72 wards under GVMC limits.
