Vizag Metro Rail Works May be Delayed :-
The state government is moving swiftly on the Vijayawada Metro rail project. whereas, Vizag has to wait for at least three more months for the metro rail project to be kick started. The actual project works are expected to start only in 2016. The state government has already formed a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to implement Vijayawada metro rail project – Amaravati Metro Corporation last week itself and also appointed retired special secretary NP. Rama krishna Reddy as MD of the corporation. Whereas, it is learnt that it will take at least three months from now for such a monitoring and implementing body to be set up for Vizag project as the DPRs prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) are to be ratified by the state cabinet and then it has to pass the scrutiny of the Union government. The DPR submission itself has been delayed due to varied reasons, including the last minute addition of Gajuwaka in the metro rail ambit.
“Due to Hudhud, the DPR works were disturbed for almost one and a half month and then, in the last minute, Gajuwaka has also been included for which DMRC had to prepare two DPRs. Since the Vizag metro rail DPR submission to the state government has been delayed. The SPV formation is also likely to be delayed. Actual works would begin once the Vizag specific corporation is formed.” a senior official of the GVMC. who has been co-ordinating with DMRC, told this correspondent. Interestingly. Vizag metro rail project has been planned even before Vijayawada project has come into picture after state bifurcation.
GVMC submitted the metro rail proposal in February 2014 itself to the Urban Transport Department which gave in principle approval for going ahead with feasibility studies and DPR preparation. On June 25, the GVMC has called for global tenders for the DPR preparation and also to conduct feasibility studies for a 25km stretch based on traffic density. GVMC received bids from RITES, SYSTRA group, SREI infrastructure finance Limited, Hyderabad based Aarvee Associates, Delhi based LEA Associates South Asia Private Limited and US-based AECOM Consultants for preparing the DPR. But later the earlier exercise had turned futile after the TD came to power in 2014, which chose to handover the DPR preparation to DMRC.
