The Forum for Development of North Andhra (FDNA) held a signature collection campaign on Tuesday against the increasing pollution levels in Vizag city, particularly in the One Town area. The forum plans to submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu about the dangerous level of pollution in the city. FDNA Chairman and ex-Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University, Prof. K.V. Ramana, wondered how the government could transform Vizag as a smart city without mitigating pollution in the city.
He said several people, residing in and around One Town area, are facing various respiratory diseases. Former IPS officer E.A.S.Sharma said that Vizag stands at second place in terms of highly polluted cities. MLC M.V.S. Sharma asked why the government was not focusing on reducing pollution levels in the city. Noted environmentalist, J.V. Ratnam, claimed that Vizag emitted very large quantities of pollutants even during the International Fleet Review (IFR) for which PM Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee were present in the city. St.Joseph’s College principal Sister Shyji, FDNA secretary A. Aja Sarma, Retired IES officer and president of Praja Spandana, C.S. Rao were present.
