AU Fine Arts Department Turns a Boon for Artists :-
Pablo Picasso’s famous adage “Art is a lie that makes us realise truth, atleast the truth that is given us to understand” is what touched the nerves of Biswajit Bage of West Bengal and landed him in the Department of Fine Arts of Andhra University in Visakhapatnam. But getting a glimpse of this campus reveals that actually many Picasos are in the making. Established in the year 1976, the Department of Fine Arts of Andhra University has been providing constant inspiration for the students who want to make a career in fine arts. Many alumni had elevated to the international stature, including Prathap Modi, P.Balaji and Ravi Katta kuri to name a few. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Prof. B. Maheswara Das, Head of the Department, explained, “All a student needs to have is interest and passion towards art. We can mould any student into a magnificent artist with in the due course.” “By strengthening our visual arts, we don’t only enrich our culture but also create avenues to earn better livelihood.“ Prof. Das added.
If one observes the students undergoing rigorous ‘live study’ training, splashing art on the canvasses or giving life to larger than life sculptures, his words may not seem an exaggeration. A beautiful sculpture, which S. Saroja, an MFA second year student, has been giving final touches to, also exhibits some incredible talent among the students. Prof. V. Ramesh explained that the artist must know how to convince others of the truthfulness of his lies that he portrays on the canvas. “Making the students develop an artist’s perspective is our main objective.” he added. But V. Ravindra Babu, a research scholar, rued about lack of encouragement for visual arts in Andhra Pradesh, which has been forcing the students to leave for other states in search of better opportunities. The Department of Fine Arts has been a home for various art exhibitions and also doubles up as a training centre for school children during the summer holidays.
