AU Finds it Hard to Get Placements :-
Andhra University, which enjoys a great reputation and legacy, is finding that not even 10 percent of its students get placed through campus selection, according to sources at its placement office. The College of Science and Technology has 26 departments and as many as 2,000 students take admission annually, but only 80 and 168 students were placed in 2014-15 and 2013-14 respectively The College of Arts and Commerce comprises 28 departments with a student strength of 1,896, but only 125 students got placed in the last academic year. Those that do get more widely placed are students from the chemistry, human resource management and pharmaceutical departments.
Dean of International Affairs and Public Relations Prof B. Mohan Venkataram, who is also the placement officer for the College of Arts and Commerce, attributed this trend to the lack of a centralised directorate of training and placement in the varsity. “The students are very good in academics. But we have to provide tailor made training programmes as per the demands of industry. We also need to have an impressive placement cell with state-of-the art infra-structure that not only looks good, but also helps recruiters give their presentations to students easily” he said. He also pointed out that a majority of students were showing interest in government jobs and preparing themselves for competitive examinations. They were eager to get into the private sector in the last 10-15 years for the package they offered and limited scope in government jobs. But now, with the public sector and government opening up, they have shifted their focus.” he added.
