Anti Ragging Awareness Seminars Begin in City :-

In the wake of recent suicide by Acharya Nagarjuna University student Rishiteshwari allegedly due to ragging, the city police has kick started a series of anti ragging awareness seminars at the colleges in the city to further root out ragging. The death of Rishiteshwari once again brings to the fore the ugly face of ragging and also indicated that universities have become hubs for unlawful activities. The ragging menace seems to have been controlled in Vizag city thanks to the efforts taken by the city police and management of various colleges. Anti ragging cells and repeated notifications against ragging have controlled untoward incidents at many colleges and the two universities in the city. Vice Chancellor of Andhra University Prof. G.S.N. Raju said that the AU has formed a centralised committee by Involving the staff and police personnel to check ragging in the colleges affiliated to the university  Only four cases of ragging were registered in the past four years in the city.

A senior police officer said that eight senior students of Sun Inter national Hotel Management College, Dwaraka nagar in the city, were booked for ragging in September 23, 2014 for ragging juniors in a freshers’ party in a private hotel. The seniors had beaten two junior students who rebelled against them and juniors had lodged a complaint against the seniors at police station. City police chief Amit Garg said that city police are part of anti ragging committees formed by the engineering colleges and other colleges and universities in the city and they has started giving the phone numbers of the nearest police stations and ACPs to the juniors students in case of emergencies and organising anti ragging meetings at the colleges.

On Wednesday, ACP (East) R. Ramana, along with inspector of MR Peta police station R. Mallikarjuna Rao visited Pyda Degree College for women at Rednam Gardens in the city and interacted with the students of the college by holding anti ragging awareness seminar. Vice Chancellor of Andhra University Prof. G.S.N. Raju said that the AU has formed a centralised committee by involving the staff and police personnel to check ragging.
