A Railway Zone at Last :-
At last, the legitimate demand of people of North Andhra for a separate railway zone at Visakhapatnam seems to have been Milled, according to reliable sources. The time has come to plan for train connectivity to all parts of Andhra Pradesh, besides introducing long-distance trains to important cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. While the growth of Visakhapatnam has been rapid during the last few decades, facilities for train and air passengers have not been commensurate with the needs of the travellers. For long, it was Kolkata that called the shots, replaced by Bhubaneswar during the last 20 years. Such has been the callousness of railway authorities that some long-distance trains from and to Howrah skipped touching Vizag. Thanks to the persistent demand and tireless efforts of local passengers’ associations and Members of Parliament. a few trains like Jodhpur and Kollam Express are now touching Vizag also on their long journey.
The need to convert weekly express trains to places like Shirdi into daily trains cannot be overstated. It is also necessary to immediately introduce express trains to Guntur, Kurnool, Anantapur and Kadapa for the benefit of the people of 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh. Railways, since their introduction more than 170 years ago in British India, have been a major source of national integration. Notwithstanding several shortcomings, they have grown in strength and stature, facilitating millions of people every day to reach places of work and chosen destinations. It is to be hoped that the ministry of railways and the all-powerful railway board will treat the state of Andhra Pradesh on par with other highly developed states.
